How bright are LED lights?

Landscape lighting has seen many advancements over the years, but few have been nearly as impactful as the invention of LED lights. These days, millions of homes have chosen LEDs as their light of choice for a variety of reasons.

Of course, people always have questions and one of those questions is whether LED lights are as bright as other types of lights. Since we get this question a lot, we thought we’d spend some time exploring LED light lumens, how LEDs compare to other types of lights, and a few benefits of installing them in your outdoor landscape.

Different Types of Light Bulbs

As with most things regarding technology, there have been quite a few advancements in the lighting industry. There are three primary types of lights used for landscapes:

  • Incandescent Bulbs — This original bulb transformed the world as we know it. In recent years, however, they’ve been largely replaced by more advanced and energy-efficient types of bulbs. In all likelihood, incandescent bulbs will cease to exist in the years to come.
  • Compact Fluorescent Lamps (CFL) — This was the industry’s first foray into low-energy lighting solutions. You’ll often find these types of bulbs used in offices, stores, factories, and similar areas. They contain a very small amount of mercury but aren’t seen as a danger to the environment.
  • Light-Emitting Diode (LED) Bulbs — This bulb is the new kid on the block, but its popularity has taken off very quickly. LED lights are extremely durable, energy-efficient, and functional in a large variety of applications. If you’re looking to save energy, this should be your first choice.

Brightness Level of LED Lights

A light’s brightness is measured in terms of lumens, which are defined as the amount of visible light produced. LED light lumens clock in at approximately 170 lumens per watt. This makes their light output higher than incandescent bulbs and CFLs per watt, meaning that if you were to have all three types of bulbs at the same wattage, than the LED bulb would be the brightest.

Cost of LEDs Vs. Other Lights

The truth is that LEDs cost approximately 14 times as much as incandescent bulbs and four times that of CFLs. However, since LEDs will last 50 and 10 times longer than those two types of bulbs, respectively, you’ll save money in the long run. Not only will you not have to replace them for several years, but your utility bills will be lower each month because they use only a fraction of the energy for the same effect.

Benefits of Installing LED Lights

The fact that LED light lumens have a higher output per watt may be enough to convince homeowners to replace their existing bulbs, but there are definitely more advantages. To give you an idea, here are just a few of the benefits you’ll receive from the installation of LED landscape lighting:

  • Energy Efficiency — We’ll start by repeating the greatest benefit of LEDs, which is their energy efficiency. If you’re the type of homeowner who’s looking for ways to lower your monthly energy bills, using LEDs will certainly help.
  • Long Lifespan — Many people are amazed at the fact that some LED lights will last for 50,000 hours and longer. Depending on the type of LED light and usage, you’ll typically get anywhere from 10 to 20 years of use out of them.
  • No Heat Emission — One of the biggest negatives of incandescent bulbs is the high amount of heat they give off, which can be dangerous. LEDs have zero heat emission, which means you never have to worry about them being hot to the touch or causing a fire.
  • Works in Low Temperatures — Some types of bulbs will have a lower lifespan if they’re subjected to the cold. LED lights, on the other hand, can operate in very low temperatures without losing brightness or suffering a lower lifespan.
  • Better for the Planet and the Environment — Anything that’s more energy-efficient is going to be better for the planet. With LED lights, however, not only do they use less energy, but they won’t wind up in trash heaps as often and don’t contain any harmful chemicals.
  • Design Flexibility — LED lights aren’t limited to any specific types of design, style, or shape. This is because they’re very small and can be laid out in multiple patterns such as a line or a circle.
